What's the best class I can pick at my gym? Zumba? Piya? Turbo Kick?

+12 votes
I just joined the gym and picked up a calendar of all their classes. To be honest, there are so many I barely know where to start.

Zumba, Hustle, Piya and something called Turbo Kick. What are these, and if you had to pick just one, which would you choose?

Should I just skip classes and do other stuff there? I'm trying to lose weight and I've never done the gym thing before.

Zumba is a latin inspired dance aerobics. It's great if you like to dance and shake your hips. I think Piya is supposed to be PiYo. It's a mix of Pilates and Yoga (get it, Pi - Yo?) Piyo is a cool class, much less bouncing about, but a great strength and flexibility class!

Does Zumba really work?

It kind of depends on what youre goals are. Classes are good for people who wanna get in better shape but maybe get bored doin the typical treadmill/weights thing day in & day out. I like  like kickboxing and spinning. Pretty intense though! so maybe not the best thing for someone just starting out.

I love the Yoga-Lates (you call it PiYa?/PiYo?) and Yoga classes I'm taking. I always feel so calm and connected to myself and the universe afterward. Plus I am getting pretty flexible now, which I'm finding has a few of its own rewards ;)

What is Pilates exactly?

kiss_this_guy is right. The dance classes are good for burning fat and building up your endurance. The strength and flexibility classes are good at toning your body (especially your core, which you need to do all those cool dance moves and yoga positions. You might want to start small and just check out one new class each week, that way you won't get overwhelmed. Other than that, I would say, which one(s) seem like the most fun for you? If you are doing something you like, you're much more likely to stick with it.

There's this hip-hop dance class or whatever at the gym i go to that is taught by this brutal gangsta soldier who you know is totally mo but I'm on a mission to convert him. His name is andre.

One day he led this class shirtless with cargo shorts and it was like a crowded rap video about MILFs with no sense of rhythm in there.

I def agree with the advice to just check out the classes at first to find the right fit. I started with a basic step class(showing my age--do they even Have step anymore?) and went to more difficult ones once I felt like I was getting the hang of things. And when I couldn't go to class, I would still crave the exercise so then I would go do something active on the stationery bikes. Now I'm in a spinning class that I love.

I like the Boot Camp class I'm taking right now. It is a punisher! Most people who are new to fitness don't stick around in this class very long. I would recommend something more laid-back, like yoga, or possibly something fun but low-impact like water aerobics. You can always try the high intensity classes later.

Those classes sound like cool. I wonder if my gym has anything like that?

I take yoga, yoga+pilates, and qi gong. They teach quiet movement and deep, mindful breathing.
